[THE SONGS]
In Romania,
we have an unfair reputation of being difficult and heavy. What we do
is generally accesible. Most of the music is based around melody and therefore
should not be difficult to get into.
The idea for
at least half of the songs is to re-educate people who are going to buy
BITTER MOON recordings, to sit down and pay attention!
BITTER
MOON never lack subtlety. The repertoire represents a collection of
songs of considerable contrast, interest and imagination. Musically, they
play a personalized brand of Grunge influenced Rock, with Metal, Funk
and Punk trappings.
Apparently
complex tracks, such as "Ciudat/Strange" and "Tanagra Noise"
highlight the effectiveness of Nick's meandering vocals, underlined by
Peter's tasty guitar licks. Nick's seductive but deeply alternative based
voice is a big plus on songs such as "Gri dorian/Dorian Grey"
and "Rosu aprins/Red".
Most songs
bear a critical, ironic, even anarchistic note, with redundant references
ridiculing Balkanic mentalities. The theme is apparent throughout several
songs, but none is so direct as the upbeat "Folclor/Folklore".
The elaborate parody of commercial Romanian manele music (in the intro)
and popular Western Romanian folklore elements (in the outro) on "Folclor/Folklore"
echoes their anti-establishment sentiments. This song's chorus is a rallying
cry to the nation's youth to fight the corruption plaguing Romania thanks
to the Ottoman Empire's permanent foothold on the country from the 15th
to 19th centuries!
"Folclor/Folklore" starts out: "I am a masochist / I live
in Romania", continues "Everything is superficial / To live
is to be dead", and ends "And it reeks of stupidity / In all
of Romania!".
There are
many angles to their music. The band is promoting a unique and complex
sound that is distinctly its' own. BITTER MOON combines strands
of rock from all eras into one explosive burst of rage. In a ninety-minute
100% live set, you will be transported from the melodic pop of RED, to
punk spirited "Cuba" and "Disident/Dissident", psychedelic
70's "Loc lipsa/Empty Space", the heavy '80's guitar riffs in
"Unfed" and "Tanagra Noise" and '90's nu metal attitude
on "Oras/The City". Live improvisations are incredible on "Strunga"
in concerts.
Prominent
throughout all the BITTER MOON tracks is Mihnea Blidariu's trumpet
playing, which adds to the group's unique and distinctive sound. Mihnea
is undoubtedly one of the most memorable frontmen you will ever chance
to see live in concert.
